5th Annual Protecting our Sovereignty Tribal Summit

Hosts: Nisqually Indian Reservation – Youth Center Building, 1937 Lashi ST SE, Olympia, WA 98513 and the Washington Indian Civil Rights Commission.

Who Should Attend: Tribal Council; Tribal Law Enforcement; Tribal Legal & Court Staff; Tribal Administrators; Tribal Directors; Casino Management & Security Staff

The following are noted guest speakers:

  • Under the Violence Against Women’s Act (VAWA) Tribes have the choice to apply for jurisdiction when a non-native person commits a crime of domestic violence on their reservation. At the summit U.S. Attorneys of the U.S. Department of Justice will present on the VAWA, and the U.S. Code §1304, that gives tribal jurisdiction over crimes of domestic violence. Special Tribal guest speakers will discuss their experience applying for VAWA & gaining jurisdiction.
  • Discussion will be held on the new state law creating an alert system for MMIWP in Washington State.
  • We have invited the FBI Task Force on Human Trafficking to discuss how tribes can partner with the FBI when tribe’s experience human trafficking on the reservation.
  • Other guest speakers will discuss issues of human trafficking, child sexual exploitation, and missing and murdered indigenous wo/men & people.
